From Marin Melchior, designer of the uber popular Butterfly Shawl comes the Butterfly Cowl! This is a little sampler of the Butterfly/Papillon Shawl pattern, perfect for dipping your toes into the techniques used in the shawl. This cowl was designed to be a fun, wearable piece of art. It uses VERY little yarn, only about 100 yds of the main color and 80 yards of the contrast color!
Finished Measurements: 18" circumference at neck edge, 9" deep at center front

I can't believe I said that (5 out of 5)
So, when I first started this project, I was completely overwhelmed because I didn't understand the organic, yet perfectly formed instructions. I initially gave it three stars. After sharing my work with the author who got back to me in less than 12 hours, I am in love with it. I am a perfection-seeking knitter, and I often have no faith in my work. This pattern is different but, if you follow the directions, don't stress out over what you THINK should be happening and just go along, it is gorgeous. There is a FB group to join, and the author is super helpful. Please give it a try! It is worth it to expand yourself with experience in doing things that are a bit of a challenge. Have faith in the process and the pattern.
So far, I am managing to produce the desired results but am finding that the directions, while extensive and with lots of hints and photos, are more complicated than may be necessary and may have some missing information. As an example, producing Shape A, the goal is to create a dip using short rows. There are six double stitches created on each side of the center closer to the outer edges, but the stitch count didn't make sense to me, at least. Once I interpreted what was required, I knew where to place the DS's, and kept the center marked and worked the short rows that way. The result is beautiful. I feel that the pattern is workable for advanced knitters, but one should be prepared for the exhaustive sections and convoluted instructions and counts. Certainly not something for any but the advanced knitter! Beautiful pattern once finished.
This is a fun pattern to knit until you come to areas where rows are missing or stitch counts are wrong. For a $7.00 pattern and a lovely scarf/stole it ruins the knitting expierence. There is no excuse for this. The same issue still being found with the butterfly shawl. I should have learned my lesson.
