Poor performance (1 out of 5)
I have used a conventional winder for many years and have been very satisfied with it. I decided to give this one a try based on the mostly positive reviews. I was very surprised by how poorly it worked. Not sure if I got a lemon or if this is how it usually performs, but the mechanism of the feeder arm going back and forth was terrible. It was jerky, slow, and uneven. The ball that was forming started falling off of the end closest to the arm, and made a tangled mess before I had even wound a quarter of the skein I was winding from the skein which was securely on my trusty wooden swift. unfortunately I had no choice but to return this item.
This is the first ball winder I've owned. I've always just ordered my wool and requested to have it balled during check out, but I've amassed such a stash of small leftover bits that I decided I could use a winder of my own. I've not been disappointed with my purchase at all. I do have to stop and tighten the clamp after I've done a few balls, but I don't feel that this is a defect so much as just the design of the product as well as the edging of my table.
