Disappointed with Day 2 yarn (3 out of 5)
Unfortunately I have to say I am disappointed with the 2023 Craftvent in the Winter nights colorway. The pale color for the day 2 ornament has too much dark variegation so that the motif is muddied and not identifiable as any particular pattern. The photo of the project was obviously done using very different yarn that enables the motifs to pop. Thankfully that yarn is only used for the Day 2 Sphere and Day 21 Mini Hearts, but the hearts will be fine with this yarn since there are no motifs. Hopefully I’ll have enough of another pale yarn when I get to Day 24 that I can redo the Day 2 Sphere, but for now I’m ripping it out.
Full disclosure: I fell behind early. But what I have gotten to is adorable. All of the goodies were great, not just good. The daily notes and treats and extras were so well thought out. I don't want to spoil it for anyone, but the truffles were truly special! It all comes together on Day 22 and puts a perfect bow on Amy Gunderson's wonderful patterns.
I’ve done other Craftvents in the past, but this year I loved the crochet pattern so much that I taught myself to crochet just so I could do this project. I love the colors and the design. My only criticism is that it’s hard for me to keep up with the daily amount of crocheting/knitting, so I liked that the first year had more notions and gave me more time to catch up. Despite falling behind almost instantly, I loved this project so much that I finished it as soon as I could. I can’t wait for next year!
3.5 stars, just not as great as previous years (3 out of 5)
Jimmy Bean's does a great job with Craftvent, so I would definitely encourage you to give it a try in the future. This year was not as good in my opinion as last time that I did it, but I applaud JBW for putting this together in a pandemic. Some of it is just my personal preference I like sampling a variety of yarns in the kit. But some are more universal issues. The pattern had way too many errors and still does even after a final super-duper proofread, and some of the surprises for you were not up to snuff some were amazing!. It's fine to give hot cocoa, but please not a cruddy store brand. Give a pack a gourmet cocoa to support another small businessnot a subpar product from a corporation that has broken its pledge against not using child labor!!
I asked for this as a birthday present, so there are two people disappointed!
First, the pattern is terrible, insufficiently tested with a list of errata a page long. One section should have at least suggested a larger needle size than the one provided with the kit. And some days have 3 times as much knitting as others, not ideal for those of us who want to knit as advent goes along have a difficult time.
The colors are also disappointing. “Northern lights” suggests much more vibrant colors than are in the kit. I was okay with the colors until I opened yesterday and realized that there were two greys touching. Poor planning on the yarn provider’s part.
It breaks my heart because it was a gift, but I will be frogging, rearranging the colors, and trying to salvage the yarn with a different project. Definitely not worth the 150 bucks my beloved spent on it.
I have participated in the JimmyBean advent for about four years now, and have loved each carefully curated box and pattern. I could not wait for the 2020 one to arrive! It came last Friday, and it looks as beautifully presented as all the others. The little bags are adorable, and I took a quick peak at some of the yarn and wow!
The only complaint I have this year and the reason I didn't give this 5 stars is that I really struggle with charts - dyslexia - so the slants in chart knitting all look alike to me. In the past, there was always a written pattern so you could do that or the charts, but this year, it is completely chart dependent. I am going to spend some time trying to color code it, but I think it would have helped to say that the pattern didn't have a written version. And my apologies if that is listed somewhere - I didn't see it, but perhaps I missed it.
